Unconsciousness | Method of Heart Massage and Artificial Respiration

Method of Artificial Respiration

Take a deep breath. Close patients's nose. Straighten patient's neck and lower his mandiable by one hand. Press the mouth on patient's mouth and exhale forcibly. The patient's chest will expand. Then remove the mouth. Air will come out of patient's lungs. This is one artificial breath. There should be 12 to 14 breaths in a minute.

Method of Heart Massage

Put one hand on the other at an area a little lower than middle of the chest. Give pressure by a push so that the chest is compressed by the hands. As a consequence there will be pressure on the heart so that blood in it will start flowing in the body. By quick withdrawal of the hands pressure on the heart will be gone and blood from major veins will fill up the heart. By repeating it 30 to 40 times a minute blood circulation may be restored and natural breathing and heartbeat may be restored.

In the meantime call an ambulance from the hospital and continue the process. On reaching the doctors will give proper treatment.

Unconsciousness:

  • What is Unconsciousness?
There can be many causes of unconsciousness. If it can be found out, take the following steps:

1. If unconsciousness is due to head injury, arrange to get the patient admitted to the hospital immediately. Until the ambulance arrives, put bricks or similar objects under  the legs on the head side of the bed so that the patient's head is at a higher level. Do not give a pillow as there would be deterioration of the condition if a vertebra of neck is broken.

2. If the patient is suffering from diabetes, it is probable that he has taken tablet or injection for diabetes and has neglected to take a meal. Therefore his blood sugar has been reduced drastically. The unconsciousness due to this condition is catastrophic. If sugar is not supplied within a few minutes the patient may die. If it is known that the patient is diabetic give him solution of glucose or ordinary sugar immediately. At the same time arrangements should be made to hospitalise him.

3. If he is a patient of high blood pressure, he will first have giddiness and then he will become unconscious. Let him lie down in a quiet down, call a doctor and let him check his blood pressure. Nowadays blood pressure instrument is available in some households and some people have learnt the method of measuring the pressure. If such is the situation the blood pressure should be measured and recorded. If the pressure is more the doctor will decide the treatment. It is necessary to get him admitted to a hospital.

4. If there is clothing of blood in patient's artery in the brain, he will have paralysis along with unconsciousness. Remove him to the hospital immediately and give treatment.

5. Unconsciousness due to burns: There could be two factors responsible for unconsciousness due to burns. It may be due to intolerable pain because of severe burns or due to reduction in blood circulation due to loss of fluids of the body due to burns. The brain does not recieve enough oxygen and glucose due to this condition resulting in unconsciousness.

The treatment should be commenced immediately, while shifting the patient to hospital. In the meantime the patient can be provided some relief by pouring cold water over the burnt area. Priority should be admission to hospital. Simultaneously, if a doctor is available, an injection of painkiller medicine should be given.
